In a groundbreaking study recently published in Plant Phenomics, a team of French researchers has introduced a cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) approach to assess the nutritional value of seed mixtures. Collaborating across various French institutions, the team leveraged a dataset comprising 4,749 images featuring 11 distinct seed varieties to train sophisticated deep learning models.
The research honed in on two primary models: Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Vision Transformers (ViT). Results uncovered that the ViT-based BeiT model outperformed the CNN in both accuracy and reliability. With a Mean Absolute Error of 0.0383 and a coefficient of determination (R) of 0.91, the BeiT model showcased its superior performance.
Taking a deeper dive into data augmentation techniques, model sizes, and loss functions, the study highlighted the effectiveness of the classical KLDiv loss over its Sparsemax variant. Despite variations in model performance across different seed types, the utilization of multiple images for the same seed mix emerged as a strategy to enhance prediction robustness and accuracy.
The study's outcome introduces ESTI’METEIL, an open-access web component crafted to assist users in estimating seed mix composition and nutritional value from images. This tool is poised to be a boon for farmers, offering valuable support in cultivating crops sustainably and managing yields effectively.
This research marks a significant stride in applying advanced AI to agriculture, paving the way for future enhancements in data balance and model performance. It underscores the growing relevance of AI in diverse fields, ranging from crop management to human health, hinting at the vast potential yet to be explored.
